GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION AND ADMINISTRATION
Jõgeva County is located in the central-eastern part of Estonia. The centre of the county, Jõgeva Town, is situated about 160 km south-east of Tallinn and 50 km north of Tartu.
Up to 1949, the territory of Jõgeva County was a part of Northern-Tartu and Viljandi Counties. In 1962 the final borders were set for Jõgeva Region as they are today, with 2,604 sq. km in area.
Such important traffic routes as the Tallinn-Tartu motorway, the Jõhvi-Tartu-Valga motorway and the Tallinn-Tartu railway pass through the county. In Mustvee there is situated the only certified harbour of inland waters in Estonia.
In 1990 Jõgeva Region was renamed Jõgeva County. It is administratively divided into 10 communes and 3 towns, each with its own municipal status. All the local authorities in the county belong to the Association of Local Authorities, an organisation which co-ordinates their work.
